Carmen Kingwill obtained an honours degree in Kinderkinetics at the University of the Free State, majoring in Psychology and Child Development. She has 9 years experience working as an au-pair and a therapist with all types of children both in South Africa and in the USA. Carmen has done various courses in Perceptual Development, Mind Moves, Behaviour Adjustment, First Aid, CPR, sport coaching and Hydrotherapy. After being trained by DBE in the new NCF for children 0-4 years Carmen decided to study further in the education field and recently obtained her NQF Level 5 through UNISA.

Before joining the Grow Learning Company, Carmen was part of a multi-disciplinary team of doctors, therapists, educators, social workers and care-givers who worked together to provide holistic care for 150 orphaned and vulnerable children in South Africa. Most of these children struggled with a combination of behavioural, academic or developmental problems. Carmen and her colleagues - a qualified Paediatric Occupational Therapist, a Child Psychologist and a Speech Therapist - assessed each child for any area of developmental delay or difficulty and provided therapeutic sessions to treat the areas that required development. Carmen also developed training programmes for the care-givers and educators.

Carmen believes in using a multi-sensory approach to teaching and treating children. Parents play the greatest role in the child’s overall development. Her passion is to empower parents and others working with children with knowledge and equipment for holistic development.

Carmen understands the importance of play in a child’s social, emotional, physical, and cognitive development. As the Grow specialist, Carmen is available to give advice on Child Developmental problems and what games and equipment can be used to overcome these problems.

“Play is the highest expression of human development in childhood for it alone is the free expression of what is in a child’s soul.” - Friedrich Froebel (Father of Kindergarten)
